30 Hour Famine

This past Friday and Saturday, the youth at our Church took place in the 30 Hour Famine. For those of you who do not know what this is, you fast for 30 hours, and have people support you for not eating for 30 hours. The proceeds go to usually World Vision, however we decided to keep ours local and collected money for God's Food Pantry at First Covenant Church. The goal is to not only raise money but also to promote hunger awareness. Most of us who participated in the fast, have never gone to sleep hungry before. It was a very eye opening experience of what most people in our world feel like. The fast started at 8 a.m. Friday and ended at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon where we had a delicious meal of lassagna, salad, and nachos. However after not eating for 30 hours and then eating a LOT of food, did not feel the best Saturday night! However by Sunday was feeling back to normal.

This is not the first time I've fasted, but it's only been a few meals, not this long. It was a very eye opening experience. One of the things we did was lit 600 candles. We then had a metrinome going for every 3 seconds. The average is that 1 person dies of hunger or malnutrition every 3 seconds. I don't even know what to say to that.

Overall it was a wonderful experience and I think our youth got a lot our of it. We went from door to door and collected non perishable food items, and also did a prayer walk around Jamestown. That was an awesome experience as well. And for those of you worried about us not eating, don't worry, we had plenty of water and juice.

I could definately see myself doing it again someday.
