Happy Easter!

I'm sorry for my lack of posts the last few days. It has been a very busy weekend and have not had time to update. So here is a long overdue update on the past few days.

Saturday I was gone from about 6:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. I went to the Great Wall for the 2nd time as well as the Summer Palace and Wangfujing St. We had a team of 6 students here from a college in the states and so I decided to go with them on their sightseeing. I mean, who knows when I'll get to see the Great Wall again! It never ceases to amaze me how incredible it is. I had also never been to the Summer Palace before which was also great to see. Unfortinately we didn't have nearly enough time to see everything, so just walked around the huge lake in front of the Summer Palace. We ended our day by going to Wangfujing St. which is the "Times Square" of China (not true). At night they have all these weird snacks on sticks such as scorpions. No, I didn't eat any scorpions. They were still moving when they were on the sticks. You picked out which one you wanted and then they deep fried it for you. Ewww.... Let's just say that I stuck with the strawberries on a stick which was delicious. : )

I also conqured a fear of mine on Saturday. I have been in China for 2 1/2 months now and have avoided a "squatty potty" so far. For those of you who are not familiar with a squatty potty it is what is usually used in China as far as a toilet goes. It is basically a hole in the ground and you just "squat and go." On Saturday I ate at KFC with a couple of the other volunteers and decided to use the bathroom before we left. Assuming it was a "western style toilet" since it was a KFC and they are usually pretty modern, I didn't think anything of it until I walked into the stall. Boy, was I wrong! So I decided to conquer my fear then and there. The best part was that it was an automatic flushing squatty potty! Oh the luxuries of China. : ) And it's not that bad. I feel as though I can do anything now. : )

Yesterday was a busy day as well. Went into Beijing with the team and took them to the Yashow Market to do some shopping bartering. The weather was gorgeous yesterday, high 70's and sunny. I was sad that we spent it inside shopping but hopefully more warm weather is on the way soon. Supposed to be in the 60's and 70's the whole week. I can handle that!

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm missing you all and am down to only a little over a month left in China, so hard to believe. Thanks for all your love and support.

  1. Yay for Grove City College! Thanks for hosting the students - I'm sure you were a great inspiration to them. Maybe one will follow in your footsteps and go back to work there someday. Enjoy the warmth of spring!

  2. Fun photos. I had to laugh as you talked about conquering your 'fear' of the squatty potty! ...admittedly, that is a fear I hold, too! I mean, what if I loose my balance and fall in...or don't do it right and pee on my pants or something?!?! ...LOL!! ;) Glad to know it wasn't so bad... though I'm sure I will try and avoid them at all cost!

One month left. Your time really is flying by. Praying we get to travel before you return. Hope you had a nice Easter and have a blessed week!

    Hugs,
    Tanya
